Do I want kids in the future? Yes, I want kids, do I need a reason to want or have kids? I don’t think so. I’m always curious about couples who can have children but say they don’t want them; I always want to ask them why? Do they think they’re going to live with their significant other forever? I think that’s being naïve, no? Some people’s reason for not having children is due to lack of perspective, they only see life through their own eyes, as they should, some witness bad events go on in the world and say they wouldn’t want to bring a child in this cruel world. Why not bring a child into this world and teach them better so they can change this “cruel world”? People who say they don’t want kids and solely focus on their careers, don’t they realize they’re going to be bored and lonely when they’re in their 40’s and above, maybe that’s just a me thought. These are the things it I think about, what are you going to do on a Christmas when you’re 70 years old, do you think you’re going to be with friends? What if your friends have kids and families who they want to celebrate it with, do you want to be that one person who’s always hanging around people because you’re alone, but they can’t tell you you’re a burden because they want to be nice. What kind of life is that, I always wonder, maybe I just don’t get it, I wish I knew someone with such thoughts to help me understand their reasons? … Does hard work pay? Of course, it does, but does it always pay. At this point in my life and everything I’ve seen other people go through, it seems that hard work doesn’t always pay, nothing in life is always that certain. In short you don’t get what you don’t aim for, and with the same breath you don’t always get what you aim for. This is how the world works, the only thing that matters is, did you do something that truly matters to you or others? The other thing is, success is subjective, it all depends on one’s taste. Someone living check to check may consider themselves unsuccessful but someone with no job or any sort of income may consider the person living check to check successful, let that sink in. As human beings we strive to achieve more and the unthinkable, for that to happen we need to take responsibility of the unthinkable, what does that mean? Well, we need to take more responsibility in our lives and not take the easy way out. This is a lesson we should teach our children, because I truly believe taking responsibility is one of the main lessons we should learn from an early age, and being responsible helps brew other important virtues such as, accountability, honesty, assertiveness, courage, self-esteem, keeping your ego in check, and this is just but to mention a few. Hi there, I recently thought about this thing where I tried to figure out if people are born bad or good. Of course, I had my own thoughts about it, but I wanted to know what other “scholars” and philosophers thought about it. It wasn’t shocking to find out there are people out there who had the same thoughts as me, even better I got to learn new things that made sense. These were my thoughts before I did my research, my thing was people are born and they aren’t either good or bad but the environment they’re introduced to makes them who they are, and that makes sense right? Yes, it does but it’s deeper than that when science is involved. We are animals, studies conducted on other animals in nature concluded that when animals are born their initial instinct is survival and we too are animals so it wasn’t far-fetched to consider that when we are born our first instinct is survival. When we are born, we can’t communicate verbally by words, we cry when we need help, when we get scared later in life we tend to scream. We scream for attention, when we are young our screams and cries tell the people that take care of us that we need something, that’s the only way to get their attention. When we feel we’re in danger we scream and sometimes even cry to get the attention of someone who might be nearby to come to our rescue. My thoughts now are, we are born to survive then we adjust to the environment we are in. Survival, is it a bad or a good thing, well, it’s neutral in my opinion because it depends on what the surviving factor in question entails, is it a survival for the fittest situation or is it survival for protection? In both scenarios, your moral ethics are challenged, and you must deal with the situation accordingly to avoid living in guilt for the rest of your life. What I came to learn for the short time I’ve been living in this world is, when you avoid your fears and not deal with them, they tend to affect you later in life. They affect the people you love more than you’d imagine, at first it isn’t a big deal because you can handle the fear or you think you’re handling it when you’re avoiding it, fair enough. The realization comes later in life when that fear is the only thing between you and your goals, either it is career-wise, relationship-wise, or whatever your endeavors might be. That’s when it hits you, the fear you thought you had under control comes face to face with you, and this time it’s even bigger than you remember it being because now there’s a lot at stake, if only you had practiced how to get over it when you had nothing to lose. That’s not fair right? Because you didn’t think it was important at all, how could you have known you were supposed to conquer that particular fear, it didn’t seem important, and if you had nobody to guide you when you were younger it’s even worse because nobody told you that fear had to be dealt with, I guess now you have to live with the fact, that’s how the cookie crumbles. Trying so hard to be good. If you’re living your life trying so hard to be good does it then mean you’re a bad person, to begin with? Or does it mean you’re trying to elevate your way of living? These are questions I ask myself from time to time. Is it okay to even try, is it worth it? and the most important query of them all, why even try to be good? I think we should all try to be good human beings to others, it might seem simple but it’s complicated, we tend to teach our children the right things but fail to practice the same things we teach them. We tell our children, don’t lie, and then we proceed to tell our spouses everything is okay when it’s clearly not. We tell our children don’t manipulate people, and then we proceed to turn people against others for our gain. We tell our children to be nice to others and then proceed to talk about other people behind their backs. We tell our children to be thankful if someone does something good for them and apologize when they make a mistake, then we proceed to ignore the little things people do for us and we also walk away when we step on someone’s shoes. It’s like the more experience we have in life the more we become hypocrites. No intros since this is a continuation, let’s pick up from where I left, the topic was about not being easily influenced by other people. It’s a gift and a curse, in what way you might ask. First, it worked well for me in a good way because back in high school a lot of my friends smoked and drank like crazy and they always offered me the “goods” but I never caved in, it just didn’t make sense to me, and if something doesn’t make sense I tend not to do it, that in itself is also a good and a bad thing but that’s a story for another day. If I felt that something wasn’t justifiable I probably would have never done it and that’s what happened with me and romantic relationships, for the longest time I didn’t see the reason why I should or could be in a relationship that’s wasn’t platonic. There’s where the influence thing becomes negative because a lot of my friends back in high school encouraged and helped me get girls but since I wasn’t easily influenced I couldn’t justify why I needed one, to me it was not necessary. Little did I know the point wasn’t to have a girlfriend, the whole point of that social structure in any society at that young age is knowing how to be comfortable around people of the opposite sex or people you find attractive. The whole point was to get used to interacting with people you really liked, at the time the importance never occurred to me. I don’t really regret my decisions or way of thinking because the same way of thinking is the only reason I’m not a drug addict, and also why I’m so focused on my life. I appreciate myself for having this mentality sometimes, and I’m not going to lie to you sometimes it sucks, especially when I realize how far behind I am in some parts of my life but then my hope shoots up the roof when I realize the same mentality has resulted in a lot of positive outcomes. It’s fair to say it’s both a gift and a curse, it has helped me be tough in difficult situations as well as weak in some, good thing is the situations I’m tough in are long term and those that I’m weak in can be fixed in a couple of months if I really put my mind to it. I think everything in life has a positive and a negative, you just have to pick which side matters to you more, and remember everything is subjective so choose wisely, at least that’s what I do and it’s worked for me so far. Some people just go with the vibe and live in the moment, I can’t even lie to you, sometimes I wish that was me, you know, just living in the moment. When I look at their lives I think it’s fun and I wish my life was that way, but it’s not, so what are you going to do about it Sam, I always ask myself, well dwelling is not an option all I can do is accept myself for who I am and move on. Dwelling doesn’t do anyone any good, and that’s something I came to learn over the years, so I try my best to avoid the shoulda woulda coulda. So about the relationship thing, I know it has its advantages and I was thinking the other day if you’re broke and single I feel like that’s even tougher than if you’re in a relationship, any type of relationship in that case. You have needs, if you’re in a relationship you have someone you can share your body with, we are fortunate to belong to a species of animals that can have sex for pleasure, I think that’s a good thing. You need someone to talk to when you have a bad day or even a good day, someone who you can share your life’s progress with, someone who cares someone who can truly lend an ear and care while at it, you need that someone in your life, because as human beings we are tribal. “I really don’t belong anywhere” that’s what I feel sometimes, but then I remember I have a family that cares and loves me (I feel weird even saying the word LOVE because I’m from a culture where we don’t say that to each other, EVER). But that’s a given they love and care for me because I’m part of the family, I’m yet to find people outside of my family who care for me or share the love. Of course, I know that’s unhealthy but circumstances in my life made it impossible for me to build long-lasting relationships growing up because every time I thought I finally built some friendships I end up moving and the process starts all over again, you’d think I would’ve gotten used to it, but now, I’m an introvert and it’s draining, it’s goddamn draining. Can we speak on dependency and whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing? Just like everything else we ought to be careful what we depend on. So should we depend on love, should we depend on something that eases the pain, should we depend on friendships? Doesn’t matter if it’s platonic or sexual, should we? Should we depend on something that makes us feel good? What if that thing is not there tomorrow, now what do we do then? Find something else, is life just about grabbing onto the next branch to swing on and never looking back? The best example of dependency that everybody is aware of is drug addiction, is that a good thing or a bad thing, of course, it’s a bad thing but a lot of people dismiss drug addicts without even caring why they’re addicts in the first place. If you dig deep into some people and why they decided to use drugs you’d probably realize that drug usage was the easier way out for them, the other way was either death by suicide or committing murder. So in that scenario was a dependency on drugs a bad thing or a good thing. I know you might say but Sakuan they could go out there and seek help. They could but you’re failing to realize that we as human beings, even you yourself have been in a situation where you’ve felt like something was only happening to you and that you’re unique, be honest with me you think, or there’s a point in your life, or even there are points in your life to this day where you feel like you’re unique. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that but the same addicts are human beings and they feel that too, so if you dismiss them and saying “well with whatever they’re going through they could have gone out there and sought help before defaulting to drug usage” it’s hard to even think about outsourcing help when you feel like whatever is happening to you is only happening to you, it’s sad (no joking I just teared up writing that ha) Love, what is it and why is it so powerful and why do people even care about it, I mean it’s just a feeling so why is it a big deal, is it overrated or underrated? To this day scholars are still trying to figure out human emotions and why things and people affect us as they do. I salute women because they’re more accepted in this world, as a matter of fact, I salute anybody who’s accepting and friendly to anybody they meet on the street. Let’s say a girl is walking down the street and you see her, she’s beautiful and attractive to you so you decide to talk to her, the nerve, right? So, you strike a conversation with her and she’s friendly, she has no reason to be, but she gave you the benefit of the doubt. Some people don’t look at it that way, they take it as “I’m trying to talk to somebody so they should talk back to me” and if they’re ignored then they think she’s entitled, no you’re entitled, for all she knows you could be a serial killer or a perverted weirdo, but you think so highly of yourself to a point where that thought never occurs to you. See where I’m going with this, let’s say she gave you the benefit of the doubt and she gives you her number, well WTF, she doesn’t even know you and now you have a chance to meet with her again and this time it’s going to be even more intimate since you’re both going to hang out for maybe a few hours. Human beings are nice. Of course of course of course, let’s talk about jealousy, there are those who are brave enough to admit they get jealous from time to time and there are those who think they’re above the natural human feeling, finally there are those who’ve worked on themselves and tried to take care of that feeling. The latter, yeah that’s me, as I said of course I get jealous sometimes, I truly believe it’s a feeling just like happiness or sadness, so it’s only natural that I feel it from time to time, not as much anymore because throughout the years I found out how to conquer it. I don’t know why writing this makes me feel uneasy but it’s necessary, so I’ll keep on going. I used to get this feeling when I watched something, let’s say a successful person being interviewed and deep inside a feeling will take over me and I found myself turning the interview off, I did this regularly. So, one day I sat down and just thought about why I did that, the only explanation was that there was a part of me that was jealous of their achievement. After the rude awakening, I felt like a trash human being. I did my research and concluded, the feeling was normal. Getting jealous is normal, it’s the feeling of someone having or taking what you think is yours or something that you think you deserve. When somebody talks to your significant other and that weird feeling creeps up, you know that feeling? The feeling that they’re taking what you think is yours, they’re taking who you think you deserve. Rightfully so the jealousy is justifiable to some extent because you and your partner had an agreement that you belonged to each other solely, but right in front of your eyes you see your partner breaking that agreement, or so you think. Don’t ignore that feeling because it’s dangerous, find what works for you and take care of it because if you don’t, it’s downhill from there on and that feeling sucks, trust me. Let’s touch on denial, what is it and why is it also important to acknowledge, according to google denial is the “refusal to admit the truth or reality of something” now isn’t that something, imagine having thoughts and feelings about something but refusing to acknowledge them. It’s crazy how some people go through denial but don’t even know it, this is why education is important, and I’m not talking about formal education. The type of education I’m talking about is when you go out of your way to learn more about yourself and other things that might be useful to you in life, it could be anything. Here comes the most important query, let’s say you have studied yourself and realized denial is apparent, what do you do then? do you give in or do you fight it? For me the answer comes down to what the denial at hand entails, is it drugs, is it love, is it betrayal from someone close to you? Even after figuring that out, you have to factor out how it’s going to affect you and the people around you after you take action. Life isn’t that simple, of course, there’s still more to think about before you act and one of the most important things to consider is, are you able to live with a good conscience after you’ve acted. These are all the factors you need to consider; I know it’s not fair when all you want is to live a simple life. What if you’ve already decided what to do without thinking about how it’s going to affect you? Should you be filled with premonitions? that’s highly plausible depending on the magnitude of your choices. Why is that you might ask me, well it was because as I was walking around reality hit me hard and I realized my life wasn’t where it was supposed to be, and of course I knew that but it’s one of those things you just know it but never really thought about it, but this time it really hit me hard, I don’t know what triggered it but there it was, the thought was in my head now what was I going to do with it. First of all, I had to ask myself why that was the case, and today I’m planning on really putting everything down on this blog post on why I think that’s the case and if there’s a way to improve on it both mentally and physically if possible. So here it goes: I’m 25 and I don’t really compare myself to other people since I was young, I guess I lucked out on that virtue because not a lot of people are that way from a young age. Let me tell you one thing, it might be a net positive to have that virtue but it also affects you in some negative ways if you’re not careful and I’ll tell you how having that virtue affected me “negatively” in some cases. Hi, it’s me again and today I feel like talking about social media and my opinions on it. First of all, I think social media is great at least for me it is with the way I use it. I feel like a lot of people go out of their way to look for the negative stuff, and I don’t blame them because human beings natural instinct is to focus on the negative stuff because the negative stuff can kill you as opposed to the positive stuff, so it’s our survival instinct in action, I guess. Let’s say you’re a normal person, no need for clout or anything you’re just a regular human being, why would someone telling you your pimple looks nasty on that one picture affect you, I mean it’s kinda true that pimple makes you look bad, the fact that you would take that to heart and let it affect you is absurd when you really think about it because subconsciously you think you’re perfect but when asked and you really think about it, you’d probably end up saying something like “nobody’s perfect,” but then end up thinking you’re a perfect subconsciously, to be fair it’s “subconsciously.” Something that I never do is just sit there and scroll through my timeline seeing what other people are up to, it’s not because I have a lot of things to do but it’s like why would I do that, what’s the purpose. You’re having a good day and you scroll down your timeline just to see your ex with a new partner and now jealousy creeps in and you start having negative thoughts, that’s not healthy. I’m not saying that I never scroll through my timeline, I do from time to time but the only difference is…, let me explain this first, I have like 5 Instagram accounts and 3 active ones, so these accounts serve different purposes for me, one family, one art and the other things that I find interesting and I only scroll the timeline of the one that I find things interesting. I never scroll through the timeline of my family or art account and it’s all strategic, and the strategy works for me so I can’t complain. So this is my opinion, not researched or anything, it’s just an intuitive thought I have and it might make sense to some of you, so when you post something and within a few seconds you get like 1000 likes and you feel good about yourself, see I don’t think that’s healthy, that’s instant gratification, it’s not healthy at all, the messed up thing is you never get used to it, because the next day you post and you get 500 fewer likes withing the same few seconds, now you start thinking you did something wrong when you didn’t. I feel like the “ALGORITHM” is responsible for more depression than what people think. You don’t suck, the app is free and people who pay for ads get more likes. The other thing is it still crazy how success is based on the amount of money you make, maybe I’m just saying that right now because I’m broke, but that can’t be right, right? To be honest with you I thought I knew what it was but after digging around in my brain I came to a conclusion that the concept of luck is complicated because there are a lot of variables when it comes to luck. Let me explain what I mean by this, ok… a good example, Elon Musk, the myth the legend himself, at the time of me writing this he’s the second richest man in the world with 166 billion dollars. Now think about it, is he lucky? A lot of people will say yes, and some will say no. Okay now when you read his story, you’ll come to find out his work ethic is insane and he himself doesn’t recommend it to anybody else, and the way he sees the world is just incredible, now what do you think, is he still lucky? Yes or no? Now here comes what I think about it, I think there needs to be a word other than luck that describes a situation like his, YES Sakuan just suggested that the English vocabulary needs more words. It’s not fair to say he’s lucky when he works that hard, also it’s not fair for a person in a less fortunate environment to say he wasn’t lucky. See where I’m getting at? No… Yes? So, in that regard he was lucky to be born in America, he was lucky to be born in the era where computers were a thing, but that was then. Is he lucky now? Well not really because he used “PayPal” to get what he has now, if he didn’t work hard after PayPal, tesla won’t be a thing if he didn’t work hard after PayPal then 2nd richest man won’t be a thing. Now, do you get my point? Do you understand why this luck thing is way complicated than what people make it to be, think about how many people got some success and relaxed after that just to end up to rags again, well he didn’t, he went up so, I don’t think it’s fair to say he was lucky. I think everybody is lucky, it’s what you do with the luck. How is everybody lucky you might ask? Well scientists say there’s a one in 400 trillion chance of you being born and yet you’re here, you’re lucky, now what are you going to do with that luck. I think that applies in life, it’s what you do with your luck because everybody is lucky to even get a chance to experience this life. So, all these stories you write, in particular, the “A CRUEL BLEAK” series, that’s my favorite one, can you talk a little bit about it? Sakuan: A Cruel ble… Sorry for cutting you off, if you don’t mind explaining what the title means first, that would be great. Sakuan: No need to apologize, well the title “A Cruel Bleak” is influenced by a title of a poem called “In the Bleak Midwinter by Christina Rossetti.” Wow, I will be sure to check the poem out when I leave here, now about the stories, what are they influenced by? Sakuan: The main theme of the whole thing is the premise that everybody has a story, when I go to the mall and see hundreds of people shopping, I can’t help but think to myself, “hm each and every single person here has a story, a whole movie can be made from each individual.” When I watch a movie and see the main protagonist walk into a coffee shop and orders coffee, well that server has a story, he goes back to his home after his shift, he or she might be insecure about something, dealing with messed up relatives, he/she might end up being the richest person in the world or they might die next week, see there’s a lot of possibilities and a lot of ideas just come from you looking at someone. So, in short people’s unique stories influenced “A Cruel Bleak.” That’s way deeper than I imagined, what about “A city in Shambles”, how did that come about? Sakuan: “A city in shambles” is also an ongoing series of short descriptions of characters who belong in a city that has seen the worst of the worst but are still trying their best to survive. That’s highly influenced by chaos. Hm… and are there any other series you’re working on as we speak, one that’s not yet published on your website? Sakuan: Well, of course, I’m a writer, I always write, as a matter of fact, I write every single day, one that I’m working on right now on the side, is the… sorry I can’t talk about it just yet, turns out spoilers is an enemy that everybody despises, sorry about that. No problemo, on to the next question, how has writing every day helped your life in general. Sakuan: I’m sharper, and I can articulate myself better than before, which is a great thing, I’m still taciturn socially but I guess that’s a perk that comes with being highly introverted. I guess writing has also helped me be even more empathetic to other human beings because when I come up with my anthologies I know there’s someone out there who’s literally experiencing what I’m writing, it might be fiction but the probability that goes on in real life is quite high since I don’t really focus on fantasy. I see I see, you touched on fantasy there, do you ever write fantasy, maybe something we’ve never seen before? Sakuan: At the moment, NO, but I’ve dabbled in fantasy in the past, and… wait actually now that I think about it I’m working on a story that some would consider “fantasy” but it’s not clear cut as that genre. Hi there it’s me again this week I thought I would just bring up the thought of confidence and maybe arrogance, just maybe. So recently I just started feeling good about myself, like my confidence just went up a lot for some reason, and as I write this I’m still trying to figure that out. The only change I’ve had in the recent past is… I don’t really know but all I know is I started writing every day on march 2nd 2021, maybe that helped me somehow, but I also have other theories. Ok so since I was three years old this is the longest I’ve taken a break from school, in short since I was three years old I never took a break from school for more than three months. Let me break it down just so you can understand what I mean, as you know I was born and raised in Kenya, and schools over there work differently than over here in America. So from when I was 3 years old to 18 years old, I never took a break from school that was more than a month, that’s how the system is set, we went to school from January to march then took April off, then three more months in school, then one month break and so on, so the cycle only allowed a month break and in some of those breaks we were required to still attend school for “tuition” as we called it. Fast forward I’m in America and for the first time, I was able to take a three-month break after a school year. Why is this the longest break for me now you might ask, well it’s because I graduated last year and I’ve been figuring out my life during this time, just how helpful was this break, well I figured I wanted to make art my career so I started drawing every day and that decision was made on the 2nd of April 2020. During that year break I also figured out I liked writing so I decided I would write a blog post every week, and that’s what this is, today is 4/24/2021 and this is this weeks ‘blog’ which is just my thoughts. As for writing every day well, I also write short stories, and every day I make sure I write a piece of idea for the stories. I think this helped brought out my confidence because for the first time in my life I feel like I own something, I feel like I’m about something, I feel like I have something to show for my existence in this life as compared to back when I used to be what I thought was “depression” bothering me, maybe it was and maybe it wasn’t, I’m not a doctor, I doubt it was depression though. Here we are, today’s topic is chasing other people’s dreams, I don’t know why I said it again when you can clearly read the title of this blog post, the reason I’m explaining myself, still to be known ha. Dreams dreams dreams, something that a lot of us have and a lot of us are trying to have for lack of better words. This week as I was working on my art and stuff, I just thought about this thing called dreams, the reason I love art, the reason I make art, the reason I decided to make art every day. Why would a homo sapien even do this, why would someone wake up every morning and just decide to make art every day, well it’s a dream I’m chasing, satisfied? No? well what I’m about to say next might even dissatisfy you, even more, I’m chasing a dream and I’m in a race that’ll never end, for the rest of my life I decided to enter a race that has no guarantees, a race that isn’t fair play, a race that doesn’t care about you but you have to care about it because if you don’t then why do you even exist, a race that’ll sharpen you and break you sometimes, an infinite race. Without a goal, human beings have no meaning, and without meaning, life seems useless and when life seems useless you feel like you don’t want to live in it anymore because all you’ll see are the negative things that life throws at you and sometimes that can be hard. Chasing other people’s dreams, when you’re young and your parents take you to piano classes and you become the greatest piano player in the world. Don’t get me wrong, you love playing the piano, it’s your passion, you’re happy with it and you worked so hard to be who you are, BUT the question is, was that really your dream or were you chasing your parents’ dream of you becoming a great pianist. I think about stuff like this all the time. Were your parents unfair to you because they didn’t allow you (unintentionally of course) to pick something for yourself? When giving other people examples of what chasing dreams and achieving them look like, is it fair to use you as an example? When you were young and the teacher asked you what you wanted to be when you grew up? Did you take a moment and remember seeing an occupation an adult was doing and thought that was the coolest thing in the world, and then you said “I wanna be a pilot when I grow up.” 20 years later you’re a successful pilot. What if you never saw that movie, where would your life be right now? Have you ever wondered this: that job you hate but can’t leave because of financial reasons or can’t leave because you’re scared, have you ever thought that’s someone else’s dream job, and that someone is somewhere out there trying so hard to get that same job you hate and wanna leave but can’t, it’s sad to think about but I guess that’s life. So, I was thinking. Oh, wait I have to say hi, so hi it’s me again and this week or today to be exact I was thinking of this life thing. Do you have to get a career that you love or get a career then learn to love it? Where I’m from (Kenya) you found a job then learned to love it, mainly because we don’t have a lot of option over there. This fact helped me choose and stick to the career I decided to chase, back in Kenya we didn’t have a lot of options in what we could do and ART isn’t considered a career to most families, a doctor, an engineer, a pilot, a teacher, working at a big company and this is just to mention but a few things that are considered to be real jobs. Deep down I understand and empathize with parents who push their kids to study things that they might not like and I get it. So what is a career and is it all just about money, is it considered a career if it doesn’t make money, and why not. When I make art, one of the things that run in my head is, “does this look professional?” but what is professional? Is it how polished your work is? Is it measured by the number of likes you get (which is based on an algorithm) why does it feel like nobody ever likes your work even though they tell you they love it, why do we always feel like we have to push ourselves to be great, why is it that a lot of people want to be rich, I bet they’ve never asked themselves “I wanna be rich, but do I even deserve it?” like why do we feel entitled to all the riches in the world, both the lazy and the hardworking hope for the same thing. Why is nothing ever guaranteed, life is a gamble from the second millions and millions of sperms, one of them carrying your DNA fight for a shot to experience this thing called life. Once we get here, the same factors apply, everything is still a gamble from the parents you have, some people are born to stable parents other to disturbed parents, some rich parents, some poor parents, others one parent others two and others none, some are unlucky to be born to parents who smoke and drink religiously, some are born in unfortunate countries where war is an ongoing thing, some are born to famine and drought, and that’s just to mention a few. Then after that, you have to pray to God that you have a strong heart and mindset to handle the world and all of this is predicated to the type of childhood you had which is another gamble of its own. When you finally come of age and pick something you wanna do with your life, you have to pick strategically because you’re gonna be doing this for a long time and there’s a chance it might not succeed which sucks, BUT THAT’S LIFE, so they say. What if you lose your career? What if it fails? But also, what if it succeeds that should be a good thing, but it is really a good thing, was it worth all the sacrifices you made. You worked your ass off for your children but they’re too young to get it so in their heads “daddy/ mommy was never home to advise me when I needed guidance on the friends I should hang out with, now one of that friend convinced me to go rob a store and the store manager shot me dead,” now you just sacrificed all your life for the future of a child who’s life got cut short, so was it really worth it. Personally, I think just trying is worth it, whether it works out in the end or not mainly because trying leads to a success and a fail percentage while not trying only leads to only a fail percentage, at least that’s how I look at it. Financial freedom is something that we all hope for but only a few of us get it fully because the more money you get the more the expenses tend to be. Sometimes I wonder if what I’m doing is the right thing or if I’m just mining in the dark and hoping to strike gold, deep down I know I’m doing the right thing but when I look around me sometimes it feels like even though it’s the right thing I should maybe switch or do something else, but I never give in to these thoughts and I thank the maker for this type of mentality. Hello there, it’s me again and I hope you had a nice Saturday as I did. By the way yesterday, the 2nd of April 2021 was my one-year anniversary of making art every day. I don’t really celebrate stuff and I’m not gonna start today, I feel like my life has just now begun because this is the biggest accomplishment of my life so far, and I know you might say, what about graduating college? Yes, that’s an accomplishment, but I don’t really see it as a big deal mainly because I was expected to, but when you say I made something creative every day for a year and still going when nobody expected you to then that to me is an accomplishment. I don’t really pat myself on the back when I do things that people consider to be “big” and maybe just maybe that’s my problem. The sad thing about doing something like this especially if you’re expecting big results like financial gain or popularity is when that doesn’t happen then you start doubting yourself on whether you’re doing the right thing or not. I’m human and sometimes those thoughts hit me, but I always remind myself why I even started doing it in the first place. The reason is, before I wasn’t doing this, I felt like a cog in the wheel of society, I felt like I was just gonna end up like yet another sad statistic, but now I feel like I own something, for the first time in my life I feel like I own something, I’m not really good with feelings but this one feels really good. If someone asked me what I was about, I won’t just be like “I work here, I went to school here, I hope my boss promotes me, blah blah blah.’ But I’ll add onto all that with “hey look I made this like this is mine, this never existed before me and I just didn’t do it as a portfolio, or perfection, or any of that “artsy” things, I made this because it gave me hope in life, it kept me sane, it made me feel like I wasn’t a stranger to myself because I can read and see what I wrote and drew respectively, “ that’s one of the greatest feelings in the world. I hope someday someone gets inspired to do what I do because it’s worth it. One of the things I also realized after doing this is, I never saw my growth happening at the moment, I only saw it once I looked back, and I feel like that’s the life you never see your growth happening, you can always look back to see your progress, it’s like a tree, if you plant a tree and keep coming every day to see its progress you’ll never see it but if you plant it and come back later after a few months or years then you’ll see the progress. Then I begin to ask myself “why does everything good in life come with a struggle? Why can’t I just get what I want.” As humans this is what we are told to believe, I’m still trying to understand why is this? WHY DOES EVERYTHING GOOD IN LIFE COME WITH A STRUGGLE. I’m trying to understand it fully, not just in a shallow way. Makes it so that when something comes easy to you, you automatically believe it’s not worth it, why is this? I think that’s just how the universe works; you can’t get anything on a silver platter they say. I think about people who do burglaries, like rob houses at gun points, sometimes even leaving fatal injuries or even death to the victims. Are these people who do this considered hard workers? I feel like there are a lot of ways to look at it; 1. they’re risking their lives to acquire something, in the wrong way, 2. They’re cowards who don’t wanna work hard the right way, 3. They’re taking the easy way out. I feel like either way you look at it, it’s all hard work by today’s standards because in today’s day and age a lot of things are being normalized that success is measured by how big your wallet is, it’s to the point where it doesn’t even matter how you make your money and it’s weird for lack of better words. Look at bitcoin, for instance, the thing is just about making money, MONEY MONEY MONEY, makes me wonder, maybe I’m having these thoughts because I don’t have that much money, and I just don’t get it. Insecurities, fear, perspective, experience. These are just but a few things that lead people to not accomplish what they want in life, or lead people to accomplish what they want in life. Let me tell you a short story. Long, long ago there lived a man who was part of a small village. The village had one big problem, they had trouble finding food and water, the warriors used to travel miles and miles just to come back with a few days’ worth of food and water. Next to the village was a cave that no one had dared entered for years because what was or what wasn’t in there wasn’t certain. One night as the man was walking to his house, he saw a wild goat go inside the cave, “hmm a wild goat,” he thought to himself “that is worth a week’s while of food.” He went into his house said nothing to anyone for the next couple of days while preparing for his journey into the cave. The day had come he felt like he was prepared enough so he got out of his house early morning before the village had its eye open. He stands in front of the cave then thinks to himself… Let’s stop there people, that short story describes a lot of things in our lives, there are several outcomes that might arise from the man going into the cave: he might find thousands and thousands of wild goats, there might be a predator in there and he might not come out alive, he might lose a limb, he might find a stream of fresh water, he might have just discovered something that will change the way they live forever. That’s life, a lot of people don’t try things because they’re scared, when that thing might be the thing that, helps them be a better person in the society, get the spouse they need, gain financial freedom, and so on and so forth, but yet they remain scared to even try and put themselves out there. I’m one of those people to this day and I’m trying to improve, to be honest, I’m not trying hard enough if I’m being realistic with myself, I’m human and so are you. You and I don’t know what’s out there and the only way to find out is to put yourself out there, try and explore new things and you’ll be surprised. Sure you might realize the world isn’t as good as you thought it would be, but you can’t change the world, and you can’t avoid it because you’re in it so what are you going to do? GIVE UP? Or you might accept the world for what it is and give it the benefit of the doubt that there are way better people and things out there. People die every second and babies are born every second. Look around you and your circle of friends and family, you might go a long time without knowing anybody in your close circle who was born or died. Sakuan: My full government is *BLEEP BLEEP BLEEP* but I go by Sakuan online, my close family and friends call me *BLEEP* How did you come up with the name Sa… Sak… Sakuan: SA-KU-AN So how did you come up with that? Sakuan: it’s easy, they’re the first two letters of each of my first, second and third name. I was about 10 years old when I came up with that. Do you consider yourself an artist? (Sakuan pauses and thinks before answering) Sakuan: Yes, I consider myself an artist, am I a good or bad artist? Well that’s subjective, just depends on who is looking at my work and why. Why do you make art every day? Sakuan: I do that because it gives me hope, a purpose and some sort of an identity if that makes sense. You also write I believe, how did that come about? Sakuan: So back in primary school as we called it back in Kenya, we used to write essays of made up stories a lot and I was decent at it. Fast forward to college here in America, my professor in a writing class I took used my work as an example to other students. At the time this didn’t mean a lot to me because I was at a weird place in my life mentally. I also used to write a lot on my notebooks when I was in a boring class about what was thinking at the time and It was always interesting to go back a month later and read the stuff I wrote just to see where my head was at. Writing relaxes me. Interesting, interesting, what inspires your art and stories? Sakuan: It’s hard to say… Would you like to expand on that? Sakuan: well, I just do it, If something looks cool to me in my head, I put it on paper, then show it to the world and whether they like it or not it’s up to them because in my head at the time, I like it. Making plans for something you want to do is important in my opinion. You plan so you can have the day you want. We shouldn’t look at plans as something we must do, we should look at plans as a guide that’ll help us reach a goal we want to achieve. Even in art or writing, you have to start with a sketch or a draft before getting into the finished product. I apply this concept in my life and it helps a lot. The reason I say this is because of this one thing called expectations, expectations kill a lot of dreams, relationships, friendships just to mention a few. The reason why people have so much expectation from things or people they barely know is beyond me. I feel like when you do that, you’re just making your life harder. That’ll make you mad when someone does something you didn’t expect them to do or you’ll just be mad when something doesn’t go the way you want it to go. Let me give you an example when somebody works so hard for years expecting success and they don’t get it, this might drive them crazy and they might even go to the extent of giving up or doing something even worse than that. But when you approach a situation like this in a way where you just close your eyes find something you love and work hard on it without expecting the world to hand you success. I say this because I’m from a third world country and I’ve seen a lot and when I say a lot I don’t just mean a lot but A LOT of people who work way harder than me or anyone I’ve ever seen and their success is not even close to what they deserve. WHY is this you might ask? My answer would be “circumstances” We don’t choose where we are born, we don’t choose what we’re born with. Just do the job you signed up for. This might apply in a lot of situations in life, but since I’m an artist I’ll talk about this topic from an artist’s perspective. I find it hard NOT to be motivated to make a piece of art every day, “How is this possible you might ask?” Well, I figured out what works for me and decided to go with it, and so far it has been a blessing. In my case it’s all a mindset thing, I twisted a few words and changed my perspective on motivation to do things. So, after research and watching a lot of interviews with people who have been in this world longer than I have, I learned a few things. First of all, I don’t find the motivation to do things (art in my case), I start making the art no matter what, and I find motivation through that, to finish what I started. I tell myself I signed up for this and now I have to do the JOB. That’s just on a micro level, and I apply the same mentality on a macro level because a lot of things in life are relative, and when you understand this, perspective in life comes easy to you, or so I would like to believe. Let’s take the same mentality and apply it to something that I did, and still doing to this day. So back on the 2nd of April 2020 I decided I would make a piece of art every day, and to make sure I did this I had to find some accountability, it helps a lot. I went on Instagram and decided I would post every day on there, that was my accountability. I realized one thing when I started my artistic journey, every time I told myself I was going to make art every day, there was this thought in my head that was always telling me “well, we need to set time out for a break, maybe the weekends?” I didn’t listen to that voice ever, instead, I stopped thinking about the “every day” thing and started telling myself that I was gonna make sure I made a piece of art “TODAY.” When I started thinking this way it was way easy for me to create the habit. To this day it’s just like brushing my teeth. I’ll go deeper now, you see I didn’t make a pact with myself when I was young that I was gonna brush my teeth every day for the rest of my life, instead, I brush my teeth because it’s today and I just woke up, and also brush my teeth because I’m about to go to bed, I don’t even think about it when I do it. As soon as I applied this mentality, I don’t even think about making sure I made art every day, I just do it because it’s today if that makes sense. After a while when you look back then you’ll be like “OMG, I’ve been making art every day since…” and then people start telling you how hardworking you are, but this doesn’t even register because to you it’s just like brushing your teeth, imagine someone telling you “You’re so hardworking for brushing your teeth every day.” What will be your response? Some artists might ask, “so what if my art is bad?” All I can say is “who are you making the art for, you or the world?” If you’re making the art for yourself then I would ask “why?” and depending on your answer, I would tell you why you shouldn’t or why you should keep doing it. Personally, I don’t make art specifically for me rather I make it for me and the world to see and hope it makes someone’s day better out there. I truly think it’s selfish not to share your art because your work might help someone out there in a way you never thought it would. You are your worst critique, so don’t wait to share your best work with the world, just share your work. There are people out there who can’t even draw a stick figure: so when this guy or girl sees you’re work that tells a story that’s not even anatomically correct, I believe they’re going to appreciate it. Trust me, if human beings lived forever, I would be the guy to advise you to wait and perfect your skills and art before you decided to share your message with the world, but the thing is we have only 100 years, maybe more if we’re lucky or less if we’re unlucky. There are artists who’ve been making art for more than 30 years who still feel their art isn’t that great. Remember everything in life is relative, the cycle never ends. Don’t decide for me, because the moment you tell yourself “This thing I made today is not good enough, so I’m not gonna share it with the world.” You’ve decided for the viewer even before they’ve seen your work. Imagine going to buy something and the store owner pops out of nowhere and tells you “Buy this,” without even knowing what you wanted, that’s what a lot of artists do when they decide their work is not good enough to share, you’re deciding for the viewer even before they see your work. What really is talent, and what’s the difference between talent and skill. I feel like a lot of people are skilled, but then throw the word talent around a lot leading it to lose its true meaning. I have several examples in mind (btw these are my thoughts put on paper, not what you should live by, but you can read them and decide for yourself what you wanna do with your life). For example, I don’t think a Lebron James or a Michael Jordan is talented, I think they’re skilled in what they do. A talent is defined as a natural aptitude, and skill is something you learn and get good at by lots and lots of practice. So there are two main reasons that throw away the thought of talent for me, and these are: How can you be talented in something that needs practice and two: how can you be talented in something that doesn’t exist. What do I mean by “Doesn’t Exist” Hmmm, how can you be talented in something that’s man-made, what do I mean by that you might ask, what if James Naismith never invented basketball back in 1891. What would that mean for a Lebron James? Therefore, I think skilled is a better word. This might not be a big deal for you, for me it is, I think about all the people who don’t try things and when asked their response is always “I would never be able to do that even if I tried” I don’t really think people should live by this mentality because human beings are capable to do a lot, so when someone looks at my art and says “OMG you’re so talented, I can’t draw a stick figure even if I tried” it’s like, this homo sapien went past all the years I put in practising to perfect my art (and still practising by the way) and jumped to a conclusion that leads him/her to that particular point. You just haven’t tried. Expectations. It’s human to have expectations despite all the times that people let us down. I think expectations are healthy, at the same time they can be ‘’depressing’’ especially if your expectations land on the negative side of the spectrum. Take for example people who do things for other people and expect a thank you or a something in exchange, I don’t think that’s healthy, I really believe if you do something for someone, even though it’s human to expect something in return we should teach ourselves not to expect anything in return. That might seem obvious to a lot of people, but it isn’t. Personally, when I do something for someone else I don’t really expect anything in return, and one of the most misleading quotes or sayings if you may, from the Bible is “Treat your neighbor as you would like to be treated.” I think that’s misleading because if I had that mentality then I wouldn’t tell people thank you when they did something good for me, because I don’t really expect people to thank me when I do something good for them. I feel like this way of thinking will help some people out there like it helps me. There are people out there who actually get mad when they do something thoughtful for someone and don’t get an appreciation, I see this a lot, and one of the most common examples is when I see people holding a door for someone, and when they don’t get a thank you or a smile they all of a sudden have this mean look in their faces, some even have the audacity to approach the person who they held the door for and confront them. In their head they think they’re doing the right thing, which is fair but they fail to realize one important lesson in life, and that is “ Just because you worked hard, just because you are a generous human being, just because you’re the most caring human being, just because you’re the nicest person in the world, DOESN’T mean the world owes you SOMETHING, THE UNIVERSE OWES YOU NOTHING,” so do good and stop expecting, because if you keep on going through this route all you’re doing is stressing yourself out. The other thing is just because something means a lot to you doesn’t mean it means jack to the next person, so stop forcing the way you see the world on other people, because from my experience that doesn’t work, all it does is divide people so the best way to tackle this issue is through education. If something means a lot to you and you feel like it’s important, try and educate the next person on it, and try your best. Story is king. I just wanted to emphasize on this idea because I don’t think a lot of artists understand how important telling a story is. There are a lot of examples that prove this, but people still don’t put it together. I’ll now give several examples, the first one being the most obvious one; a date, say you’re on a date, what is the first thing people ask you, that is, after the Hello and all that. When you sit down at lunch, dinner, or maybe even breakfast, hey don’t judge, I think some people actually have breakfast dates. Now back to the matter at hand, so the first thing people ask is where you’re from or have you ever been in a relationship, do you have a pet, what are your political/religious beliefs, what’s your family like, what music are you into, have you ever watched that one tv show or movie? And so on and so forth, with this example, you can tell they’re basically asking you, hey, you there, “WHAT’S YOUR STORY?” Now you see it right? …NO? okay I’ll give you another scenario. Let’s say you are applying to get into a college or trying to get a job, the first thing they ask you is; hey you there, yeah you, what are your qualifications, and you pull out your portfolio or a degree. This is basically telling them your story which is, I’m good at what I do, and you can trust me with your business. If you’re trying to get into a school, you’re basically telling them; I worked hard and I’m not going to waste your time here, and that’s your story. That is why I truly believe story is king. A lot of artists go to art school to learn the technical stuff, like how to render images, how to draw well, how to paint well, how to make good compositions, which is valid and I think a lot of artists should do this, the fundamentals are important, but don’t stop there, learn the fundamentals and use it to tell your story/stories. I believe in the near future there’s going to be some sort of technology that’s going to be able to do all the technical stuff for us. There’s going to be a software that will be able to draw and render a character for both 3d and 2d animation, all you’d have to do is tell it a few words like, hey Alexa draw me a young, naive, ambitious, highly fashioned, pirate, and the ai is going to take this and come up with 300 different images, 100 linework art, 100 stylized cartoon art, and 100 fully 3D rendered characters, when this happens a lot of artists are going to be out of jobs, just like when the Englishmen started building machines. When it comes to stories it’s a whole different situation because only you can tell a story that’s unique to you. Story is king because we still remember Shakespeare’s work right? we don’t know what Romeo and Juliet looked like in Shakespeare’s head, but we all know about his story, look at the biggest movie in the history of mankind, it’s something from a comic book which was made years ago before technology was able to make a movie like The Avengers. Stories shape the universe, look at the holy books, two examples being the Bible and Quran, these holy books are responsible for how over 80% of human beings live their lives today, only 16% of the world’s population is estimated to NOT be religious. Inspiration, what inspires you and why does it inspire you? For me, a lot of things inspire me, but I’ll talk artistically because that’s what I’m all about. For the longest time… honestly what I’m about to talk about still happens to me from time to time. Sometimes I find it weird when artists talk about what inspires them. There are those who will talk about how they find great inspiration from people like Salvador Dali, a Pablo Picasso, or a Van Gogh, and the list of great artists goes on, I have a lot of respect for all these great artists. There are those like me, who are different in a sense, personally, I think it’s different for me because of my background. Growing up none of these famous artists from our art textbooks inspired me to make art. I’m sure they probably would have inspired me if I was born and raised in America, but I wasn’t. Up until I picked up art in college I had never heard most of those big names, and at that point, they didn’t appeal to me, because I knew I loved art and it wasn’t because of any of them. I tried so hard to find inspiration from their art like most artists of my generation did, but I couldn’t, and at that point, I felt so bad, I felt like an outcast in the art community. Artists talk with passion about all these great pieces of artwork, and I admire the passion, to be honest, at times I’m envious of their passion. I had to convince myself that it was okay TO LIKE WHAT I LIKE and be fine with it. Now let’s talk about critiques, I hated critiques back in college and I think this was because I didn’t go to an art school, rather, I went to a college that offered art. In a lot of my art classes, there were students who attended for one reason; their major required them to take an art class. Oh boy, let me tell you about the critiques, for the most part, it was tragic, you could tell such students gave their opinions to your work not because they cared for your improvement but because a grade was attached to their comments, they didn’t know anything about colors, linework, shading, composition or nothing, of course not all of them acted in such manner. That was my first experience with critiques as an artist and I hated it, and I MEAN HATED the hell out of it. Fast forward, after graduation I joined some art communities, in most of them people were nice, and some were just there to promote their social media, and I respected the hustle. But in some situations it felt like someone who didn’t know what I didn’t know gave me advice to something we both didn’t know; it was like a story of the blind leading the blind, don’t get me wrong there were some valuable critiques but it felt like a never-ending cycle. It was, make art, post it, get critiqued while hoping the person critiquing knew what they were talking about, rinse and repeat. So, I decided to DM a bunch of professional artists asking for some advice. Some who replied were nice, they gave me valuable points, but some didn’t give me any advice they just directed me to their gumroad, Patreon, or a paid service of some form, deep inside I was just like, ‘’dude I just want to know if my lighting is right”. At some point, even that felt like a never-ending cycle of learning, I wasn’t making art I was just practicing. If you had asked me then, ‘’hey Sakuan let me see some of your pieces,” I had nothing to show, and it felt bad. I decided to start making my own stories through my art, even if the art part sucked, I figured if the story is there, that’s all I needed. This decision was influenced by other forms of art; dancing, acting, pottery, sports, singing, just to mention a few. Out of all these different forms of art, we are the only ones who come up with an idea, make sure to tell a story with it, then create something from a sketch while making sure you have the fundamentals in check, make sure your designs work and after spending hours on it hope people like it, mind you all this is done solo. As a writer, all you have to do is put a story on paper and hope someone likes it, as a dancer all you have to do is master a couple of moves and practice. I only use those two comparisons because those are two forms of art I also have some sort of experience in. A lot of artists (painters and such) are stuck in practicing and they have nothing to show for it other than accurate dynamic poses and it’s sad. Story is KING. Advice from me to you, figure out what you want to create and then start creating, in the process of creating you’ll learn. For example, you want to draw two people fighting, start drawing and if the arm is not looking right then go do some arms studies and come back, apply the knowledge you got and keep on going, that’s how you grow. You grow by doing, you can tell a cool story through stick figures. Okay, now let’s get to the topic at hand. The concept of time is interesting to me, I think I still struggle with it from time to time, see what I did there? Let me explain… or try to. I know I have the potential to learn and do a lot of things, but the fact that everything takes time to be decent at, makes me want to focus on things I’m already good at. I don’t know if that’s a problem or not. A lot of people say you should focus on your strengths and not so much on your weaknesses. What if your weaknesses are more interesting than your strengths, now what do you do? Let’s get back to the topic at hand which was TIME, shall we? it’s crazy to think that everybody you know right now and every homo sapien alive right now will statistically be dead by the year 3021, that’s over 7 billion people gone, just like that… let that sink in… When you think about things this way, it makes you want to leave a mark in the world, leave a legacy of some sort, either it be big or small, popular or not, makes you want to leave something. I think this is what people chase when they seek popularity or at least some people. I figured the way I would like to leave a mark in this world is through my art, and thanks to the internet everything you post on here stays here forever. The dilemma is, should what you leave, matter to you, the rest of the world, or both? Art should be used as a mode to express one’s self, I’m in a dilemma right now with this portfolio thing. Every credible person I listen to is saying something different. Some are saying, “You should cater your portfolio to the company you want to work for and use their style.” Others say ‘’You should do what you love because in a case where you’re hired and now are expected to perform a task, it’s hell if you don’t like doing what you’re required to do.’’ I agree with the latter idea but then, your work will receive only but a few eyes. Every time somebody says my art is cool, there is this voice in my head that tells me “They’re saying that because they’re just trying to be nice.” I know I shouldn’t think this way but for me, this is one of those things that you just can’t help. I did it because I just realized how privileged I was to live in America where anybody can achieve, “THE AMERICAN DREAM” and so the race started, it’s amazing how I never burned out or even think twice about turning on my drawing tablet every morning, recording my journey and sharing it with the world. I don’t create art to be successful financially or anything, that’s a secondary goal, the primary goal is to build something for myself.
